Fuel presents Fuelling Change
Fuelling Change is a podcast series, created and presented by Fuel’s Artistic Director & CEO Kate McGrath.
Season One explores the role of producers in live performance over the last twenty years and what artists need from producers now and in the future. Through interviews and conversations with artists including Khalid Abdalla, Rachel Bagshaw, ESKA, and Alan Lane, and producers including Louise Blackwell, Anthony Gray and Kate Scanlan, Kate explores the evolution of the role of producer in live performance over the last twenty years, and what artists need from producers now and in the future. The research was co-commissioned by Clore Leadership and the Arts and Humanities Research Council and was supervised by Aoife Monks and Molly McPhee from Queen Mary University. Music by Dave Price. Transcription by Alice Roots. Special thanks to all of the research participants: Khalid Abdalla, Rachel Bagshaw. Kathryn Bilyard, Louise Blackwell, Ed Collier, Inua Ellams, Christina Elliot, ESKA, Anthony Gray, Alan Lane, Pauline Mayers, Kate Scanlan, Hannah Smith and Sarah Wilson-White. Season One is produced by Fuel and edited by SLAP – Sounds Like a Podcast.
Season Two was recorded live in Oxford, in summer 2025, with leaders from across the cultural landscape – independents, founders and leaders of major institutions exploring ethics and values in cultural production today. The live events were curated and hosted by Kate as part of her Fellowship with the Cultural Programme and Hertford College at Oxford University. The Fellowship offers artists and curators the chance to reflect on their practice, develop new work, and share it with a wider audience. This research and series of events provide a unique opportunity to reflect on the past, look ahead, and explore the evolving opportunities and challenges of cultural leadership today. This season is co-produced by Fuel and the Cultural Programme at Oxford University. In partnership with The Story Museum, Old Fire Station and Oxford Playhouse. With thanks to all of the podcast participants: Farooq Chaudry OBE, Deborah Frances-White, Tobi Kyeremateng, David Lan CBE, John McGrath, Devyani Saltzman, Professor Michael Smets, Professor Emma Smith, and Professor Eero Vara. With special thanks to Hertford College. Recorded and edited by SLAP.
